Alcohol, Obesity Fueling Rise in Bowel Cancer Death Rates
Death rates from bowel cancer are set to increase in adults aged 25-49 in 2024. According to recently released research, this increase in bowel cancer deaths is likely fueled by growing rates of obesity and related health conditions as well as heavier alcohol drinking and reductions in physical activity.
This information on rising early-onset bowel cancer (also known as colorectal cancer) death rates comes from the UK and European Union (EU) and corresponds with similar statistics recently released by the American Cancer Society.
In the UK alone, deaths from early-onset bowel cancer are predicted to rise by 26% in men and almost 39% in women in 2024 as compared to 2018. Countries like France and Italy – where alcohol consumption has been reduced – are not predicted to have a sharp rise in bowel cancer deaths.
On a more positive note, the death rates for most other cancers are set to decrease, although pancreatic cancer is another exception to this trend. It's set to moderately increase in 2024, which again is tied to greater rates of obesity, diabetes, alcohol consumption, and smoking.
Tomato Juice Can Kill Salmonella, May Protect Digestive Health
Tomato juice possesses antimicrobial properties that may be able to kill Salmonella Typhi – a pathogenic bacteria responsible for causing typhoid fever – a new study has found. It also showed antimicrobial activity against other bacteria that can cause digestive and urinary harm, including E. coli.
Tomatoes contain naturally occurring compounds known as antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that help to combat infections within the plant while it's growing. Their potential effects in humans have not been well studied up to this point, something the most recent study sought to address.
In the study, researchers tested both tomato juice and isolated AMPs against Salmonella Typhi and other pathogens. They found that the juice and peptides were able to eliminate S. Typhi, its variants, and other harmful bacteria by impairing the protective membrane surrounding each pathogen.
Along with showing that tomatoes and tomato juice may have benefits for protecting digestive and urinary health, these findings could also prove helpful in the fight against typhoid fever in other countries, especially since two specific tomato AMPs were found to be effective even against antibiotic-resistant Salmonella Typhi variants.

12 Impressive Health Benefits of Spirulina, An Emerging “Superfood”
Spirulina is a blue-green algae packed full of protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It's nutritious enough to be considered a superfood (if anyone knew what that term really meant) and is linked in research to impressive benefits like lower cancer risk, blood pressure and cholesterol reductions, and even allergy relief. Spirulina may also help improve health for those with fatty liver disease and could help improve fasting blood sugar levels as well. (More)
Boosting Cardiorespiratory Fitness Can Lower Prostate Cancer Risk
Cardiorespiratory fitness is a measure of how well your respiratory and circulatory systems can supply oxygen to skeletal muscles during exercise. Better cardiorespiratory fitness is generally associated with better overall health, and a new study has now found that just a 3% improvement in cardiorespiratory health could lower the risk of prostate cancer for men by up to 35%. You can improve this type of fitness through regular aerobic exercise like walking, running, dance classes, etc. (More)
Ginkgo Biloba May Improve Stroke Recovery
Ginkgo biloba is an herb that comes from the leaves and/or seeds of the ginkgo tree. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries and contains antioxidant compounds that have shown potential for protecting nerve cells from damage. Some recent research shows that intravenous injections of specific ginkgo compounds could significantly improve cognitive recovery after a stroke. However, it's important to note that ginkgo biloba is not currently approved for medicinal use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. (More)
Can Sleeping Too Long Increase Your Dementia Risk?
Getting the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep each night has long been linked with favorable health outcomes in studies. Sleeping less than 7 hours a night, on the other hand, can raise your risk for a number of health issues, including dementia – but what about sleeping too much? Unfortunately, getting more than 9 hours of sleep per night can also be harmful with a recent study linking it to an increased risk of both dementia and stroke. (More)

Not only is the thumb the only opposable digit on your hand – meaning you can move it opposite your fingers to pick up and hold items – it also has its own pulse due to the princeps pollicis artery that goes through it. This is why you shouldn't try to check your pulse with your thumb.
